DeRUYTER — Host DeRuyter Central was an easy winner Tuesday night in a game between unbeaten Central Counties League boys’ basketball squads, rolling past Cincinnatus 59-29.
The Rockets, now 2-0 in the league and 5-0 overall, led 12-4 after one quarter and outscored the Red Lions 19-3 in the second to move to a 31-7 halftime lead and take control of the contest.
“Their high-pressure defense rattled us in the beginning and prevented us from getting into any rhythm,” said Cincy coach John Protheroe, whose team is now 2-1 in the league and 2-4 overall.
Ethan Grime led all scorers with 12 points for the winners, while Brett Vosburg added 11 and Sean Rutherford 10, including a two-handed dunk off a steal in the first quarter that Rockets coach Todd Widrick singled out as his team’s game highlight. “It was a great overall game for all of our players,” he said.
Greg Monroe led Cincy with 10 points, while Kyle Eaton added eight and won praise from Protheroe for his senior leadership on the floor.
CINCY JVs won 52-44, improving to 4-2 overall, as Manny Uribe scored 17 points and added eight rebounds while Jason Lindley had 12 points, six rebounds and five steals. Joe Perri added 11 points and four assists, and Will Loomis had 11 rebounds for the winners, who scored the final eight points of the game after it was tied at 44-44.
Ian Bishop paced DeRuyter with 12 points.
