All-star shine to six Purple Tigers
Second-place Cortland High placed six players on the first team in all-star voting by the Section 3 Class A American Division’s football coaches.
The honored Purple Tigers are senior tailback Corby Reynolds, senior linebacker Jake Bryson, senior defensive end Justin Guerin, senior linebacker Garrett Wyatt, junior linebacker Caleb Wright and senior fullback Josh Morehouse.
Cortland finished second behind East Syracuse-Minoa in the chase for a division title and reached the Section 3 Class A playoffs, where Whitesboro upended the Purple Tigers. CHS finished 6-3 overall and earned honorable mention status in the final Class A state poll.
Also named to the first team were, from league champion ES-Minoa, junior defensive lineman Eric Cushing, senior defensive back-kicker Andy Heagle, senior quarterback Ben Kreischer, junior running back Dustin Moss, senior defensive back Sahar Nero, senior offensive lineman Eric Waltz and senior linebacker Alex Watkins; third-place Fulton’s Travis France (senior linebacker), D.J. Ingham (junior running back), Vinny Martinez (senior defensive back), Jake Osborne (senior defensive lineman) and Nick Tomarchio (senior defensive back); Jamesville-DeWitt senior linebacker Peter Anderson, senior quarterback Joe Daddario, sophomore receiver Demetrius Mitchell and junior offensive lineman Kenny Schunck; Fowler seniors Brian Doyle (linebacker), Keyron Rhodes (running back) and Teondre Johnson (defensive back); Mexico senior offensive lineman Mike Mourningham and, from Oswego, senior offensive lineman Adam McPherson and junior running back Damian Williams.
Cortland’s second-teamers are senior tailback-safety Brandon Fitzgerald, senior defensive lineman Dan Foster, junior offensive lineman Camerin Edgar, junior cornerback Jordan Prior, senior defensive end Ian Spafford and junior running back Dyquann Barlow.
The rest of the second team is, from ES-M, seniors Dillon Canorro (offensive line), Vince Caraballo (defensive line), Nick Cullen (linebacker), Zaid Jinadu (receiver), Matt Letcher (defensive back) and Andy Wowelko (offensive line); from Fulton, seniors Brandon Ashby, Kyle Coe and Chris Woods and juniors Rane Sorbello and Jake Talents; from J-D, seniors Cody Black and Keenan Cannon and juniors Lamar Kearse and Lonza Williams; from Fowler, sophomore offensive lineman Darren Cooley, senior linebacker C.J. Maeweather and senior receiver Ronnie Pugh; from Mexico, junior running back Jacob Burke, senior receiver Jerrett Keys and senior defensive lineman Kile Green and Oswego senior tight end Ryan Burger and junior receiver Dan Cirino.
Honorable mention went to Cortland senior kicker-punter matt Porter, senior cornerback Will Fickenscher and senior offensive lineman Mitch Fitts.
Also earning honorable mention were ES-M’s Kyle Button, Ryan Gilkey, Josh Marko, Branden Roberts, James Russo and Jaquan Williams; Justin Baldwin, Mike Conners, Ken McCann and Nick Millard from Fulton; J-D’s Tacarri Davis, Cody Marsh, Mike Paul and Ryan Whipple; Fowler’s Daquan Coleman, Chris Gilkes, Elijah Graham, Josh Hester and Marliss Stroman and, from Oswego, Mike Brown, Matt Demm, Matt Howard, Adam Johnson, Abe McAndrew and Troy Norton.
Cortland coach Dave Darrow’s comments on his first-teamers follow —
On Reynolds: “A captain, Corby works hard and is an ‘old-school’ player. He does the right thing every day. He had 780 yards rushing and eight touchdowns.”
On Bryson: “A good student of the game, Jake was our defensive team leader and a great tackler. He had 75 total tackles, 38 solo, and 10.5 for losses of 18 yards, plus three sacks.”
On Guerin: “Justin was a captain and a team leader. He was a super defensive end, with 43 tackles - 5.5 for losses of 15 yards - and three sacks.’
On Wyatt: “Another captain, Justin leads by example and is a good leader who outworks everyone. He had 62 tackles, including 22 solos, with six for losses of 28 yards and 1.5 sacks.”
On Wright: “Caleb has a nose for the football, reads very well and is an awesome talent. He had 58 tackles with 28 solos, six for losses of 46 yards, and one sack.”
On Morehouse: “Josh was a great blocking fullback who allowed us to be very successful running the football. He rushed for 181 yards (four yards per carry) with four TDs.”
