OHSL Volleyball: Homer handles Hannibals
HANNIBAL — Homer Central had little trouble continuing this unbeaten volleyball habit.
The Trojans got the week started by sweeping past host Hannibal 25-16, 25-18, 25-20 in an OHSL match Monday, improving to 5-0 in the process. Coach Brian Fox’s spikers stretched their winning streak dating back to last season to 23 consecutive outings.
Jessica Mitchell had six kills to lead the attack, Lauren Smith and Lindsey Sears with a handful of putaways apiece at the net. Orchestrating the offense were setters Taryn Heath and Emma Gutchess, who had 12 and eight assists, respectively.
Lainne Reed was a defensive demon with 10 digs, while Heath headed up some steady serving with five aces. Mitchell, Smith and Gutchess had two service aces apiece, while Logan McEvoy contributed three kills to the offense.
Elizabeth Sullivan had six kills and two blocks to lead Hannibal’s attack, while Sierra Ingersoll had 10 assists and Brandi Moody three kills.
HOMER JVs were 25-16, 25-18, 25-20 winners at Hannibal, the Trojans fourth victory in five matches this season.
“This was a well-rounded match for us, with contributions from top to bottom,” said Homer coach Jeremy Cook. “We were really able to serve tough and used that to help our offensive game plan.”
Tanya Priadoun’s seven aces were part of that solid serving for the Trojans, Mikayla MacNeill and Hannah McEvoy with four aces apiece. McEvoy had six kills and three digs, MacNeill five kills and a block and Baylee Buchanan five digs defensively in the victory.
Homer teams visit Oneida on Wednesday for a non-league match, the JVs getting things underway at 5:30 p.m.
