Trojans bounce back for victory
Homer Central girls proved that they are a resilient group.
One night after suffering a tough basketball loss, the Trojans bounced back with a great team effort and rolled to a 48-30 OHSL Liberty Division home court victory over Skaneateles Tuesday. It was the first leauge victory in three tries for Homer, which improves to 2-4 overall.
Skaneateles slips to 0-4 in division and overall play.
“We played very well tonight,” said Homer coach Marv Zimmerman. “We showed a lot of intensity. We were diving for lose balls, hitting the boards strong and we shot the ball well. It was really a total team contribution.
“We built a big lead in the third quarter,” Zimmerman continued. “That allowed us to play everyone in the fourth quarter.”
Homer got off to a great start as the Trojans poured in 16 points to enjoy a nine-point lead. With continued success, the Trojans increased their advantage to 27-11 by halftime and 38-18 through three quarters. The fourth quarter was evenly played with the visitors enjoying a 12-10 advantage.
Courtney Rainbow led the balanced Homer offensive attack with nine points. Gabby Luety scored eight points and pulled down 12 rebounds for the home team. Jessica Rigg played another solid game at point guard with eight points and strong defense.
As a team, the Trojans netted seven 3-pointers and held a 31-25 edge in rebounds.
Jackie Leslie paced the Skaneateles offense with 10 points. Emily Call chipped in with nine points.
Homer returns to action Friday hosting Marcellus at 7 p.m. in Liberty Division play.
HOMER JVs showed good team-play as well and the result was a narrow 28-26 win for the Trojans.
“Offensively, we had more of a team effort tonight with several girls scoring points,” said Homer coach Cris Colasurdo. “We continue to do well on the defensive end. We improved our rebounding tonight, pulling down 26 boards.
“Ashley Barnard and Chelsea Jones both had solid performances,” Colasurdo added. “ The girls continue to set goals and they are reaching them. They really work hard as a team and continue to improve.”
Chelsea Jones led Homer with eight points and five rebounds. Meagan Hartquist added six points with Ashley Barnard netted four points to go with six steals and five rebounds. Jessica was balanced with four points, fourrebounds and four steals.
Kait Kingdeski led Skaneateles with 10 points with Shannon Byrne adding five points.
Homer JVs host Marcellus Friday at 5:30 p.m.
