Local high school teams ready for holiday action

The gap between Christmas and New Year’s will once again feature a number of tournaments involving area high school sports teams.
The Cortland High Booster Club’s annual boys’ basketball tournament will take place Friday and Saturday at Shafer Gym.
In the varsity event, the host Purple Tigers will take on Homer Central on Friday starting at around 7 p.m., after Dryden meets Marathon at 5:15 p.m. The consolation game will start at 5:15 p.m. Saturday, followed by the championship game at around 7 p.m.
The JV tourney will feature the same first-round matchups Friday as Cortland meets Homer at 1:45 p.m., with Dryden and Marathon going at it starting at around 3:30 p.m.
The JV consolation game starts at noon Saturday with the title contest to tip off at around 1:45 p.m.
The annual Alumni Game, featuring former CHS players broken into two teams, will take place starting at 3:45 p.m. Saturday. All players are asked to show up by 3 p.m.
The Homer Central girls’ basketball team will host its own tournament on Friday and Saturday. Homer and Cortland’s JV teams will meet Friday at 12:45 p.m. with the Trojan and Purple Tiger varsity squads battling at 5:45 p.m. Tully and Onondaga are the other two teams in the tournament.
The Tully and Onondaga JVs will tip off at 11 a.m. with the two varsity teams meeting at 4 p.m. The JV consolation game is 10 a.m. Saturday with the JV championship game scheduled for 11:45 a.m. The varsity consolation game is slated for 2 p.m. and the varsity title game is at 3:45 p.m.
The Cortland-Homer hockey team’s annual Holiday Tournament will take place Friday and Saturday at the J.M. McDonald Sports Complex. Fayetteville-Manlius and Cazenovia will get things started at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, and the Golden Eagles will face Frontier from Section t starting at around 7:45 p.m. The consolation game will begin at 11:30 p.m. Saturday, with the championship game slated to get underway at around 1:45 p.m.
The Cortland High wrestling team will compete in the Brett Dixon Memorial Dual-Meet Tournament at Central Square starting at 9 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday.
Besides the Purple Tigers and host Red Hawks, the tournament field also includes Cazenovia, Holland Patent, New Hartford, Penfield from Section 5, Port Byron and West Genesee.
Three local teams will be part of Fabius-Pompey’s holiday boys’ basketball tournament Friday and Saturday. Groton and Cincinnatus will meet in the first round at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the high school, with McGraw facing the hosts immediately following, at around 7:15 p.m. The consolation game will be at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, with the championship game tipping off at around 7:15 p.m.
The same matchups will be in effect for the JV tournament, which will take place at the elementary school. McGraw meets Fabius-Pompey at 5:30 p.m. Friday, followed by the Cincinnatus-Groton game at around 7:15 p.m. The consolation will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the championship contest at around 7:15 p.m. on Saturday.
Marathon girls are in the basketball field for the Bainbridge-Guilford Tournament, to face Windsor in a 3:45 p.m. first round game on Friday.
The Marathon JV girls will meet Windsor JVs at 2 p.m. Friday. The consolation and championship games take place Saturday.
The DeRuyter boys’ basketball teams will visit Otselic Valley in Central Counties League play Friday, with the JV game tipping off at 5:30 p.m.
The Cortland High volleyball teams will host Weedsport on Monday in matches rescheduled from Dec. 12, the JV match slated to start at 3 p.m.
