CHS Tourney a local hoops affair

The annual Cortland High Christmas Boys’ Basketball Tournament will have a local flair to it when first round games get underway Tuesday at Shafer Gymnasium.
After Marathon (3-3) and Dryden (3-2) open things up at 5:30 p.m. with a first round contest that also counts as an Interscholastic Athletic Conference regular season game, Homer Central (0-3) and host Cortland High (2-0) will renew their neighborhood rivalry at 7:30 p.m. in a match-up that figures in the OHSL Freedom Division standings.
The tournament’s consolation game starts at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, with the championship to follow at 7:30 p.m. back at Shafer Gym.
The same first-round matchups will be in effect for the junior varsity tournament featuring the same four schools. Cortland and Homer meet at 3 p.m. on Tuesday after the 1 p.m. contest between Marathon and Dryden. The consolation game starts at noon on Wednesday, with the title tilt at 2 p.m.
The Cortland High Alumni Game will also take place from 4-5 p.m. on Wednesday, with all former Purple Tiger players who are interested asked to show up in the downstairs gym at 3:30 p.m.
In other local tournaments:
— The Cortland-Homer hockey team will face Division IB opponent Utica Proctor at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the J.M. McDonald Sports Complex in the first round of its holiday tournament, after Cazenovia and Frontier from Section 6 meet at 5:30 p.m. The consolation game is at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, with the championship to be decided starting at 8 p.m.
— Both Dryden and Groton girls’ basketball teams will travel to the Trumansburg Christmas Tournament Tuesday and Wednesday. Dryden meets Newark Valley in the first round at 5 p.m. with Groton facing host Trumansburg in the 7 p.m. game. These first-round contests will count as IAC league games. The consolation games takes place Wednesday at 5 p.m. with the championship game to follow at 7 p.m.
— The Marathon girls’ basketball team returns to the Bainbridge-Guilford Holiday Tournament Tuesday and Wednesday. Marathon will meet Whitney Point at 3:45 p.m., following the JV first-round game between the same two schools at 2 p.m. These counts as IAC regular season games. The other first round match-ups have host Bainbridge-Guilford battling Unatego. The JV game is slated for 6 p.m. with the varsity game to follow at 8 p.m. On Wednesday, the JV consolation starts the day at 2 p.m. followed by the varsity consolation game (3:45), JV championship game (6 p.m.) and varsity championship game (8 p.m.)
— The DeRuyter boys’ basketball team will host its Christmas Tournament, sponsored by the Booster Club, Tuesday and Wednesday. The Rockets will face Otselic Valley in a league game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday after McGraw and Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton play at 6 p.m. The consolation game is at 6 p.m. Wednesday, followed by the championship game at 7:30 p.m.
The DeRuyter and OV junior varsity squads meet at 3 p.m. Tuesday, with the McGraw/G-MU matchup follows at 4:30. The championship game tips off at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday after the 3 p.m. consolation contest.
— The DeRuyter girls’ basketball team will face the hosts at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the first round of the Fabius-Pompey Tournament after Cato-Meridian and Chittenango meet at 2 p.m. The consolation and championship games are at 2 and 4 p.m., respectively, on Wednesday.
— The Cincinnatus boys’ varsity basketball team will also be in tournament action at Fabius-Pompey High School/Middle School Tuesday and Wednesday, meeting Oneida at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the first round. The Red Lions will then play in either the consolation game at 6 p.m. or the 8 p.m. championship contest on Wednesday against either Fabius-Pompey or Cazenovia.
The Cincinnatus JV boys’ basketball team will go against Oneida at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Fabius-Pompey Elementary and then face either the hosts or Cazenovia on Wednesday at the same site starting at 6 p.m. in the consolation game or 8 p.m. for the championship.
— The Cincinnatus JV girls’ basketball team will take on Vernon-Verona-Sherrill at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday in the first round of the Madison Tournament, with Morrisville-Eaton and the hosts meeting at 5:45 p.m. The consolation game will start at 11 a.m. Thursday, followed by the championship game at 12:30 p.m.
— The Homer wrestling team will travel to Skaneateles Wednesday for a 3 p.m. non-league action.
— The Marathon wrestling team will travel to the Windsor Christmas Tournament Wednesday and Thursday. Mat action begins at 3 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. Thursday.
