Simonetta, Reed named third-team all-state
With the new year just one week old, two local high school football players received the highest honors possible for their exploits on the gridiron during the 2008 season.
Homer Central School senior Brandon Simonetta and Groton Central School junior Kyle Reed were each named to the New York All-State Football Team in their respective classifications. Simonetta was a Class B third-team offense selection as an end/wide receiver while Reed was a Class D third-team defense pick at linebacker.
Simonetta helped rewrite the school record book for his offensive receiving and scoring exploits in 2008, but he was really a triple-threat player. Simonetta was dangerous as a runner, receiver, special teams kickoff and punt return specialist and he emerged as a solid tackler on the defensive side of the ball.
Reed was selected for his intensity and aggressiveness on the defensive side of the ball, but he is another multi-threat player. On offense, he is outstanding lead blocker who can also catch and run the ball effectively. On defense, he is a team leader while he can also put points on the scoreboard on special teams as the kicker.
They were not the only Section 3 and 4 players to receive New York All-State Football recognition.
Class B First Team Offense honors went Oneida senior quarterback Ryan Kramer, Oneida senior end Brandon Miles, Waverly senior lineman Chris Nocchi and Oneonta senior running back Brendan Pidgeon with First-Team Defense accolades going to Oneida senior linemen Matt Gillmeister and Will Jones, Holland Patent senior linebacker Dan Fruscella and Waverly junior linebacker Kevin Gorman.
Class B Second Team Offense selections were Westhill junior end Dan Root and Norwich senior lineman Vaughn Labor while Second-Team Defense picks were Owego senior lineman Ethan Farabaugh and Chenango Valley senior linebacker Brian Stinson.
Joining Simonetta as Class B Third Team Offense honorees were Marcellus junior quarterback Will Fiacchi and Chenango Forks senior lineman Nolan Haycock with Third Team Defense slots going to Holland Patent senior lineman Brian Moore and Oneida senior linebacker Wade Kline.
Class D First Team Offense selections included Binghamton Seton Catholic junior end Joe Martin, Dolgeville senior lineman Doug Gray and Walton junior running back Phil Hanley with First Team Defense anchored by Walton seniors Chris Mead (lineman) and Cody Reed (cornerback), Dolgeville senior linebacker Andy Johnston and Watertown IHC senior linebacker Antonio Doldo.
Class D Second Team Offense saw Elmira Heights junior lineman Zach Levanduski, Walton senior lineman Kenny Reynolds, Candor senior running back Cody Rose and Dolgeville senior running back Clay Ardoin honored while Reed was joined on Second Team Defense by Walton’s Reynolds, who doubled again on the line.
