Rockets rally to squeeze by Lions

The DeRuyter Centra girls’ basketball team used a strong fourth quarter to score a 37-32 Center State Conference Division V win over visiting Cincinnatus Wednesday night.
In boys’ basketball action, McGraw tuned up for its upcoming visit to rival Cincinnatus with a 62-36 Central Counties League romp over visiting Stockbridge Valley while DeRuyter lost to host Blessed Virgin Mary Academy 60-39.
DeRuyter 37, Cincinnatus 32: The Rockets trailed 25-23 after three quarters but outscored the Red Lions 14-7 in the fourth to improve to 4-1 atop the league standings and 5-2 overall.
Junior guard Sam Gordon led the winners with 18 points, complemented by junior guard Courtney Randall with 10 and freshman forward Andrea Chapman with nine to account for all of the winners’ scoring. Cincy (1-3, 2-6) got 16 points from senior forward Joleen Wingenbach.
“I could not be more proud of these girls,” DeRuyter coach Heidi Terrell said. “We definitely showed heart. We were down 11-0 in the first quarter, came back and were losing 13-6 at the end of the first quarter. We were down by two, 21-19, at halftime. At the end of the third we were still down by two and we came back to win.”
Both teams next play Otselic Valley, DeRuyter on the road this Wednesday and Cincy at home on Jan. 24.
McGraw 62, Stockbridge Valley 36: The Eagles came out of the gate strong, rolling to a 22-4 lead after one quarter that sealed the deal early. “This was a complete team win for us,” McGraw coach Matt Martins said. “We had 12 different players contribute points. We started the game out strong and kept up the pressure in the second half. Our starters continued to add to the lead in the third quarter and moved the ball very well.”
Senior center Brad Hill led the winners (7-1 in the CCL, 10-2 overall) with 12 points while junior guard Collin Pickert had nine and three players — senior forwards David Leach and Jon Morse and senior guard Chris Sweeney — added six apiece. Tyler Harrington scored a game-high 18 points for the Cougars (0-8, 1-10).
McGraw visits Cincy Friday, starting with the JV game at 5:30 p.m.
Blessed Virgin Mary Academy 60, DeRuyter 39: After each team scored 10 points in the first quarter, the hosts exploded to a 19-5 second-quarter advantage and never looked back to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Junior forward-guard Zach Wheeler led the Rockets (2-9) with 12 points and sophomore guard-forward Josh Phelps added nine. Alex Mills led BVMA with 14 points while James Payne added 13 an Anthony Mariani had 12.
DeRuyter hosts Madison Friday, the JV tipoff slated for 5:30 p.m.
