DRYDEN — Tompkins Cortland Community College men’s basketball came up just short of another dramatic comeback Thursday as the game-tying three-pointer rimmed out in the closing seconds of an 86-83 loss to Cayuga Community College. TC3 is now 9-11 overall and 4-3 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference while Cayuga stands at 9-12 overall and 2-5 in the MSAC.
The visiting Spartans enjoyed the better of play most of the first half, leading by 14 before TC3’s Chris Cartwright scored the final six points of the half to pull the Panthers within eight at 44-36.
The second half opened with the visitors again taking control, pushing the lead to as much as 19 points with 8:14 left to play. A steal by Charleston Collins, Jr. and a lay-up by Tynez Wilson started the comeback, as TC3 scored seven straight to pull with 12 at 75-63. After the visitors pushed it back to 16, Robert Farmer capped a run to bring the Panthers to within 10 at 81-71 with 3:30 left. A four-point play by Jonathon Charette followed by a jumper by Collins and three-pointer by Cartwright pulled TC3 within two at 82-80 with 90 seconds to play.
After the team traded baskets, Cartwright’s potential go-ahead three-pointer rimmed out, but an offensive rebound led to a free throw by Charette to pull the game within one. A pair of free throws by Cayuga’s Isiah Watkins made it 86-83 with seven seconds left, but a Collins three-pointer rimmed out in the final second, giving the win to Cayuga.
Cartwright led the team with 30 points, including seven three-pointer, and seven assists. Collins posted a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds and Charette scored 14 points to go with nine rebounds.
Cayuga was led by Watkins with 19 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double. Vance Kelley added 18 points to the winning effort with Terry Harrison and Jimmy Hill netting 14 and 12 points respectively. Harrison also had a double-double with a game-high 14 rebounds for the Spartans.
TC3 WOMEN could not contain the nation’s leading scorer, Caitlyn Dillard, Thursday. Dillard, who averages 25.6 points a game for Cayuga CC, poured in 34 points to hand the Panthers an 87-59 basketball loss. The Panthers fall to 10-9 overall and 1-6 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference while Cayuga improves 18-4 overall and a MSAC-best 6-1 in conference play.
The game opened with the home team getting on the board first on a layup by Katrina Benson. After Cayuga scored a pair of buckets, Kyla Knapp tied the game with another layup. It proved to be the last time the Panthers would be tied as Dillard scored the next three baskets to spark a 25-10 run to give the visitors control. The margin stood at 40-26 at the half before a second-half opening run erased any chance of a TC3 comeback.
Jessica Wormsley was the only Panther to reach double figures, scoring 10 points, all in the second half. Benson and Mackenzie Stilwell each grabbed eight rebounds to pace the Panther team on the boards.
In addition to Dillard, Corissa Quattrini netted 15 points for the Spartans while Samantha Race added 10 points.
TC3 is home against Finger Lakes Community College Saturday.
TC3 men and women’s basketball will host Finger Lakes Community College Saturday. The Panther ladies tip-off at 1 p.m. with the men battling the conference leader at 3 p.m.
