Local teams set for sectional play

The Cortland High boys’ basketball team, with a record of 16-2, is seeded third in the Section 3 Class A tournament and will host either No. 6 Indian River or No. 11 Fowler Tuesday in a 7 p.m. start.
The Purple Tigers’ prospective opponents were to meet at Indian River tonight in a first-round contest. Carthage (17-1) is the top seed in Class A, followed by No. 2 Bishop Ludden (16-2), Cortland and No. 4 New Hartford (15-3).
The McGraw boys (17-1) are the top seed in Class D and will also open with a quarterfinal game Tuesday starting at 7 p.m., against the winner of Saturday’s game between eighth-seeded Poland and No. 9 Rome Catholic.
The fourth-seeded Cincinnatus boys (13-3) will host No. 13 Brookfield in a Class D first-round contest starting at 8 p.m. That game will follow the first-round girls’ Class D contest, starting at 6 p.m., between visiting 12th seed Otselic Valley (5-13) and No. 5 Cincy (10-7).
The Cortland High girls are the only other area team involved in Section 3 post-season play. The Purple Tigers, seeded seventh in Class A at 10-8, visit No. 2 Whitesboro (13-5) Tuesday starting at 7 p.m.
In Section 4, the Groton Central girls are the only team to receive a home game in tournament play. The seventh-seeded Indians (12-4) will host 10-seed Bainbridge-Guilford (10-7) in first round play Tuesday at 7 p.m.
In Class D girls, 12-seed Marathon (6-11) will travel to fifth-seed Afton (10-7) Tuesday at 7 p.m.
In Section 4 Class B boys quarterfinal round action Wednesday, sixth-seeded Dryden High (12-5) will travel to third-seed Chenango Valley (11-6) for a 7 p.m. contest.
Class D boys first-round play will have 10th-seed Marathon (6-11) traveling to seventh-seen South Kortright (13-4) Wednesday for a 6 p.m. game.
