The playoff hopes for the SUNY Cortland men’s hockey team were jolted Friday night.
Four different players scored goals for visiting Potsdam in a 4-1 victory over the Red Dragons at Alumni Arena in clash of SUNY Athletic Conference teams battling for a spot in the upcoming playoffs.
The tops six teams advance into the playoffs, as Potsdam now holds down fifth place in the standings after improving to 5-6-4 in the conference and 8-11-5 overall.
Cortland (5-8-2) and Buffalo State (4-7-4) are tied for sixth place with 12 points apiece heading into the final day of the regular season. The Red Dragons host first place Plattsburgh — a 2-1 winner over Oswego last night to wrap up the regular season SUNYAC title — tonight at 7 p.m. while Buffalo State plays hosts to third place Brockport.
In the loss to Potsdam, senior Mike Maier scored the lone goal for Cortland (8-14-2 overall), with junior Patrick Palmisano and sophomoire Jarrett Gold picking up assists. Freshman goalie Mike Reilly turned back 30 shots, as the Red Dragons were out-shot 34-32.
The Bears took a 2-0 lead with early first-period goals. Freshman Todd Hosmer scored on a rebound at 1:38 and sophomore Fraser Smith knocked in a loose puck at 3:18 on the power play. Maier answered for the Red Dragons with a backhand goal in front just 36 seconds later to make it a 2-1 game at the end of one.
Potsdam added two goals in the second period to pull away. Sohomore Patrick Choules scored on a rebound at 2:39, followed by junior Connor Treacy’s wrister from the slot while the Bears were skating with a two-man advantage. The Bears killed off three Cortland power plays in the third period and held on for the 4-1 win.
Cortland was 0-for-5 on the power play for the game, as Potsdam freshman goalie Trevor O’Neill turned back 31 shots.
