Red Dragon roundup: Estarfaa, Spanbauer honored
SUNY Cortland men’s basketball senior guard Blair Estarfaa has been selected to the 2016 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III East All-District Second Team, while head coach Tom Spanbauer has been honored as both the NABC East District and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Div. III Upstate New York Coach of the Year.
Estarfaa led Cortland this winter with 15.4 points and 2.5 assists per game in 29 contests, all as a starter. He shot 41 percent from the field, including 38 percent (83-of-216) from 3-point range, and was a 75 percent free throw shooter. Estarfaa also averaged 3.2 rebounds per contest.
A first team All-SUNYAC selection, Estarfaa scored in double figures in 24 of 29 games with six games of 20 or more points. In his three seasons at Cortland after transferring from Medaille College, Estarfaa scored 969 career points in 80 games (12.1 points per game), shot 40 percent from 3-point range (183-of-457) and hit 76.1 percent of his free throws.
Spanbauer earned NABC regional coaching honors for the fourth time overall and the second time in the last four seasons, and the ECAC coaching award for the first time. He led the Red Dragons to a 21-8 record, a SUNYAC title, and the second round of the NCAA Div. III tournament. Spanbauer’s teams have won 20 or more games eight times, have won three SUNYAC crowns and have qualified for six NCAA tournaments.
SUNY Cortland junior Alexandrea Flint has been named the State University of New York Athletic Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 20.
Flint went 3-1 with a 1.62 ERA in four starts during the week for the Red Dragons in Florida. She threw a two-hit shutout with a strikeout in a 6-0 win over Lesley and a six-hit shutout with two walks and two strikeouts in a 6-0 win over Dickinson. She also posted a victory against Washington College (Md.) after allowing only one run on six hits.
For the season, Flint is 4-1 with a 1.27 ERA and three shutouts in five starts. The Red Dragons will play a doubleheader Friday at 2 p.m. at The College of New Jersey and a twinbill Saturday at noon at DeSales University in Pennsylvania.
Cortland junior attacker Kristen Ohberg has been named the SUNYAC Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending March 20.
Ohberg became the 16th player in program history to reach 200 career points as she helped lead the top-ranked Red Dragons (5-0) to an 18-10 win at ninth-ranked Tufts last Wednesday. Ohberg scored a game-high seven points on four goals and three assists and added one ground ball and one draw control.
Ohberg currently leads the Red Dragons with 29 points on 20 goals and nine assists. Those totals include four goals and one assist in a win at Nazareth this week. Ohberg’s current career totals are 129 goals and 78 assists for 207 points.
Cortland (6-0), ranked first nationally in Div. III, will host unbeaten and fourth-ranked The College of New Jersey on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
