Homer’s Adkins hurdles to Spring Break firsts

TULLY — Homer Central junior Jekeytha Adkins was the standout local track and field performer Monday at the Tully Spring Break Invitational.
Adkins won the 100-meter hurdles in 17.47 and ran a personal-best time of 1:13.29 to finish first in the 400-meter hurdles, with sophomore Trojan teammate Jade Auchmoody a close second in 1:13.96 in the latter race. Adkins also took third in the long jump at 14-0.
Junior Katie Dovi was second in the long jump at 14-4 and also took fifth in the 200 in 29.19 to pace Cortland High at the meet.
The Trojans took second among the 13 scoring girls’ teams with 64 points, Liverpoool the winner with 76. Cortland was 12th with 14 points.
Homer relay teams finished second in three events. The 1,600m relay foursome of freshman Erica Stevens, junior Jenna DeLine, junior Laura Dart and Auchmoody turned in a clocking of 4:46.7, while junior Emily Harrington, sophomore Hannah McEvoy, freshman Lucy Connery and senior Lia Kabat finished second in the 400m relay in 56.27. The 400m thrower’s relay squad, consisting of freshman Lauren Fisher, sophomore Hannah Agate, freshman Sara McNamara and freshman Lydia Brown was runner-up in 1:06.05.
Kabat also tied for fourth in the high jump (4-2) and was fifth in the 100m (13.99), while Harrington was fourth in the long jump (13-6.25) and the 3,200m relay team of freshmen Taryn Waligurski, Grace Gugerty and Erica Stevens and senior Abbey Gray was fifth in 11:12.81, Waligurski and Gugerty with personal-best times.
Gray took sixth in the 3,000m in 12:06.79, while sophomore Brynn Hyde was sixth in the discus at 77-4 and Dart sixth in the 400m in 1:10.65.
For Cortland, the 400-meter relay team of senior Sierra Darling, Dovi, senior Sabrina Edwards and junior Ciara Tallman was fifth in 57.71. Senior Emalee Burkhard was fifth in the discus at 78-5 for the Purple Tigers.
HOMER BOYS WON the unique thrower’s 400-meter relay race — with junior Mike Lavere, senior Chris Estep, freshman Zack Sovocool and junior Seth Ruddick timed in 56.46. The Trojans’ 400m relay team of juniors Dylan Shattuck, Andras Tozser, Devon Drake and Brandon Chaffee took second in 48.66 as the Trojans were 13th among the 15 scoring teams with 15 points and Cortland was 15th with six points.
Homer senior Tim Walsh took fourth in the 800m in 2:10.73, junior Devon Drake was fifth in the triple jump at a personal-best distance of 35-8.75 and the 3,200m relay foursome of senior Max Randolph, sophomore Freideric Handelmann, sophomore Kory Platt and sophomore Zach Randall took sixth in 10:01.72. In a non-scoring event, junior Andrew Schrauben took third in the novice shot put at 32-11.
The Cortland 1,600m relay team of senior Travis Kryger-Stramba, junior Matt Bellardini, junior Zach Forrester and junior Frank Davenport took fourth in 3:55.91. Forrester took fifth in the pole vault at 9-0 and the 400m throwers’ relay team of freshmen Glenn Kenyon and Sam Grant and seniors Matt Tuning and Jacob Mitchell was sixth in 1:00.94.
Cincinnatus was also at the meet, though the Red Lions failed to score any team points.
Homer’s teams next see action Saturday at the Baninbridge-Guilford/Afton Spring Break Invitational, while Cortland’s teams are off until April 18 when they host East Syracuse-Minoa to open their OHSL Freedom Division dual-meet seasons.
