Homer Central senior Dan Miller struck out 17 Solvay batters in a 16-0 Trojans victory Wednesday.

Pitcher Dan Miller was nearly untouchable Wednesday.
The Homer Central senior left-hander allowed just three hits and struck out 17 batters as the Trojans rolled to a 16-0 OHSL Liberty Division victory over visiting Solvay. Homer is now 1-1 in division play and 7-1 overall. Solvay slips to 0-1, 3-4 overall.
Jonathon Orioli broke up Miller’s perfect game with a one-out single in the top of the fourth inning. Kyle Groth added a lead-off double in the fifth, but advanced no farther.
“Dan Miller stepped up big. When it’s under 45 degrees, he is my pitcher,” said Homer coach Rob Nasiatka said after this chilly outing. “It was nice to see Dan get the run support and the quality start.”
The biggest Bearcat scoring threat came in the seventh inning when Taylor Delpeurto led off with a walk and Tom Hayes followed with a single to put runners at the corners. Miller struck out Groth and Matt Fantacone before Hayes was forced at second for the final out of the game.
Homer gave Miller all the run support he would need in the first innings as a dozen Trojans strode to the plate and eight of them scored. Brandon Simonetta led off with a double and scored on a single by Zach Blanden. Simonetta was 2-for-4 in the game while Blanden was a perfect 3-for-3. Each drove in three runs.
Brendan L’Hommedieu was hit by a pitch and Alex Duell reached on an error that allowed Blanden to score. Eric Rosato (2-for-3) walked to load the bases.
With one out, K.J. Reese, Ricky Newman and Jack Kissel drew walks to force in one run each as the lead grew to 5-0. A fielder’s choice by Simonetta drove in another run. As Simonetta stole second, an error plated Newman with the seventh run and Simonetta scored on another single by Blanden before the final out ended the inning.
The Trojans plated four more runs in the second inning. Rosato hit a solo home run with one out before three more runs scored as the result of walks and errors.
The bottom of the fourth inning saw Coach Nasiatka beginning to empty the bench while three more runs scored. Kissel (2-for-2) hit a one-out single and scored on Simonetta’s triple. Pinch-hitter Alex Nelson walked and pinch-hitter Matt Compton singled home Simonetta with two outs. Nelson scored on a double by Rosato as Compton went to third. The third out ended the inning, but Homer now led 15-0.
Homer scored its final run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Reese walked and moved to second on a passed ball. Kissel singled to put runners at the corners. Reese scored on a single by Zandrew Zimmerman.
Homer will return to action Friday when the Trojans travel to Cazenovia for a 4:30 p.m. Liberty Division contest.
