Luety’s hot bat boost to Homer
CHITTENANGO — Gabby Luety continues to swing the hottest, if not most powerful, bat in Homer Central’s softball line-up.
With teams worried about returning all-state slugger Stephanie Hartquist in the third spot, sophomore Luety is making pitchers pay from the clean-up spot.
Luety went 2-for-3 with another double and home run as the 17th-state ranked Class A Trojans improve to 11-1 in division play and 14-2 overall with a solid 11-1 OHSL Freedom Division victory at Chittenango.
The beaten Bears fall to 2-10, 3-13 overall.
“Gabby is seeing the ball really well right now,” said coach Cris Colasurdo. “She is not just getting singles, she is hitting with power.
“The whole team really got off to another good start,” Colasurdo continued. “Halee (Riley) and Jess (Rigg) pitched a solid game while Danielle Swarm really showed great range while making plays at second base.”
Homer jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Courtney Rainbow led off with a single and moved to second on a ground out. Stephanie Hartquist followed with an RBI single that scored Rainbow. Luety came to the plate and ripped a double that drove home Hartquist. Luety would score the third run on a two-out single by Kenna Riley
The Trojans added four more runs in the fourth. Whitney Andrews walked to begin the merry-go-round. Rainbow followed with a single and Swarm scored Andrews with a base hit. Hartquist hit into a fielder’s choice that forced Rainbow out at third. Luety then cleared the bases with a three-run homer over the left field fence as the Trojans built a 7-0 advantage.
Homer plated four more runs in the top of the seventh.
While the visitors were pounding out 14 hits, Halee Riley and Rigg were shutting down the Chittenango offense. Riley worked the first three innings and fanned five batters while Rigg worked the final four innings. The two pitchers combined on a five-hitter, with the only Bears’ run coming in the bottom of the seventh.
Rainbow, Swarm and Hartquist each went 2-for-5 while Ashley Brown and Rigg were 2-for-4 at the plate.
Kaleigh Clark hit a double for the only Chittenango extra-base hit.
Homer will return to Freedom Division action Monday as the Trojans host Cortland High in a 4:15 contest behind the Elementary School.
