Happy CHS ending, Trojans reach .500

The Cortland High boys’ tennis team ended the dual-match portion of its season on a high note Tuesday afternoon, sweeping visiting Mexico 5-2 and 7-0 in a pro-set doubleheader.
The wins gave the Purple Tigers final records of 3-7 in the OHSL Freedom Division and 5-10 overall.
Homer Central, meanwhile, improved to 5-5 in the OHSL Liberty Division and overall with a 4-1 win over host Westhill.
Cortland 5-7, Mexico 2-0: Senior captain Kyle Davis won twice at first singles for the Purple Tigers on their Senior Night, beating Mexico’s Colby Minter 10-1 in the opener and 10-2 in the second match. Four players were in on two doubles victories, all of them with two different partners.
Senior Jacob Passalugo won at first doubles twice, 10-3 with classmate Elias Rivera over Tylor Allard and Mitch Shambo in the opener and 10-8 with fellow senior Mike Morgan over Shambo and Ian Roach in the second match. Junior Devin MacHenry and sophomore Kaleb Fairbanks are 3-1 after a default second-doubles win in the opener, while MacHenry and senior Mike VanDonsel improved to 2-0 with a 10-2 win over Ryan Lee and Bradley Fravor in the nightcap. Fairbanks and sophomore Ryan Dorward won by default at fourth doubles in the second match, while Dorward and junior Andrew Adsit were third-doubles winners by default in the opener.
Senior Nick Franceschelli is now 5-3 after a 10-6 win over Mitch Pettit at third singles in the opener. Sophomore Kristian Reynolds beat Pettit 10-8 in second doubles in the second match, in which junior Brandon Schaff was a 10-0 third-singles winner over Allard and eighth-grader Max O’Connell won by default at fourth singles in the first singles match of his career.
“Kyle won handily in the opener,” CHS coach Bob Walrath said. “He played very strong, had good control on his shots and moved fluidly around the court. Nick was in a tight match, down 6-5, before going on a roll to win the last five games. Jacob and Elias Rivera took control early and never looked back at first doubles. Unfortunately Mexico was not able to field a complete team and had to forfeit second and third doubles.
“Kyle faced off against the same opponent in the second match and was just too strong last. He played relaxed and confident to complete the sweep. Kristian played a solid match at second singles spot and Brandon completed the sweep in singles,” added Walrath. “Jacob and Mike Morgan played well together in their first doubles win, while Devin and Mike VanDonsel teamed up to seal the 7-0 win for us.”
The Purple Tigers will next see action in the Section 3 Class B Tournament, starting Monday at Utica’s Parkway Courts. Those qualifying for the event are Reynolds (6-6) at third singles, Davis and Passalugo (4-1) at first doubles and the second doubles tandem of MacHenry and Fairbanks.
Homer 4, Westhill 1: The Trojans swept the three singles matches, while senior Matt Schrader and junior Ian Heath stayed perfect to 10-0 with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win over Dan Chang and Brian McMullin at first doubles.
Senior Scott McLaughlin was a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 winner over Dan Haynes at first singles, while at second singles senior Jorge Martinez downed Fletcher Chapin 7-5, 6-2. Third singles went to senior Patrick Kiernan, 6-1, 6-0 over Jake Kinsella.
“We were slow moving tonight getting off the bus, but it turned out to be a solid win,” Homer coach Nancy Cavellier said. “Scott can really move the ball and keep his opponents guessing and when his serve’s on it’s on. Jorge played his game in the second set and gave us our first point. He’s been a consistent player and positive role model for the team.
“Patrick once again owned the court and got compliments from the Westhill coach on his athleticism. Matt and Ian rolled to another win, putting them 10-0 for the season leading into sectionals,” she added.
The Trojans host Syracuse CBA Thursday in a league doubleheader.
