Purple Tigers ride 3-run 5th to victory

The Cortland High softball team bunched three of its four hits and scored all of its runs in the fifth inning Wednesday against East Syracuse-Minoa on its way to a 3-2 OHSL Freedom Division victory at Meldrim Field.
The Purple Tigers, now 5-10 in the league and overall, trailed 2-0 heading into the fateful frame, which Megan Turco led off with a single before Alyson Prunier came on as a pinch-runner. An outfield error on a fly ball by Eric Turco put runners on second and third, and Prunier scored on a singleto left by Lisa Dovi. Aubrey VanGorder then singled to left to plate Eric Turco, and Dovi scored the eventual game-winner on a sacrifice fly to right by Andrea Turcsik.
ES-M (9-6, 11-9) was held scoreless with just two baserunners over the final four innings, CHS pitcher Maggie Reagan scattering seven hits and fanning one batter in earning the win. Cortland coach Mick Lowie praised the defensive efforts of his team, singling out left fielder Alena Turturro for her performance.
The Spartans scored once each in the first and third innings on a pair of RBI singles by Mary Laskowski, who along with teammate Beth Stone went 2-for-3. Mallory Martino took the hard-luck loss for the visitors, allowing just the four hits (Melanie DelRosario collecting the other single) with three strikeouts.
The Purple Tigers finish the regular season by hosting Mexico at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Meldrim Field.
