Dragon duo selected 1st team All-America
SUNY Cortland sophomore Meaghan Kohler and senior Abby Martin were first-team selections to the 2012 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III All-America team
Kohler was named a first-team All-America outfielder and Martin was a first-team “utility” selection for her combined role as a first baseman and pitcher for the Red Dragons.
Junior teammate Lucia Meola earned third-team honors for the second straight year – this season as a second baseman after being selected as a third baseman in 2011.
Six Red Dragons earned NFCA All-Northeast honors. Kohler, Martin and Meola were first-team selections Senior pitcher Lyndsay Rowell and senior outfielder Lorraine Stoddard were second-team honorees and senior shortstop Jessica Harman was named to the all-region third team.
Cortland finished the season with a 41-10 record for its fourth straight 40-win season. The Red Dragons qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament for the ninth time in the last 10 years and finished third at the Amherst (Mass.) regional to tie for 17th nationally.
Kohler, out of New Jersey, batted .359 and set school single-season records with 17 home runs and 68 runs batted in. She also registered 12 doubles and finished with a .763 slugging percentage. Kohler’s 68 RBI were the highest total nationally in Div. III and her 17 home runs were tied for second nationally.
Oswego native Martin batted .393 with five home runs, 44 RBI and a .632 slugging percentage. She tied the school single-season record with 18 doubles. In the circle, she finished with a 12-4 record, 2.58 ERA and 97 strikeouts in 84 innings pitched Martin was a second-team all-region selection as a junior in 2011.
Meola led the Red Dragons with a .396 batting average and 51 runs scored. The Cicero-North Syracuse grad recorded 11 doubles and two triples and tied a school single-season record with 24 walks. She finished with a .474 on-base percentage and a .972 fielding percentage (five errors in 180 total fielding chances).
Rowell, out of Sandy Creek, posted a 19-6 record, 2.30 ERA and 122 strikeouts in 164 innings pitched. She earned all-region honors for the second straight season. She was a first-team all-region and third-team All-America selection as a junior last spring.
Stoddard from Liverpool batted .364 with four home runs, 38 runs batted in and nine doubles. Harman (Penfield) earned all-region honors for the third time (second team in 2011, third team in 2009 and 2012) after batting .347 with 15 doubles, 20 RBI and a team-best eight stolen bases.
Academic Honors for Dragons
Cortland’s Martin was also named to the second team of the 2012 Capital One Division III Softball Academic All-America team. The team was chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
In addition, Martin is one of three Cortland players chosen to CoSIDA’s Capital One Division III Academic All-District first team for District 3 along with Harman and Kohler. Martin is a kinesiology major who entered the spring semester with a 3.61 cumulative grade point average.
Harman, an academic all-district selection for the second straight year, is a kinesiology major who entered the spring semester with a 3.84 cumulative GPA. Kohler is a criminology major who brought a 3.51 GPA into the spring semester.
