Cortland duo tosses two-hitter

BINGHAMTON — Jake Prignon and Jake Woods combined on a two-hitter Friday evening as Cortland beat host B-Mets Orange 5-2 in its Southern Tier Teener American League A regular-season finale.
Starter and winner Prignon allowed one hit, a third-inning two-run double by the hosts’ Mike Stewart, in five innings of work and had seven strikeouts. Woods threw the final two innings for the save, surrendering one hit and fanning three batters.
Cortland (7-4-1) got all of the runs it would need early, taking a 4-0 lead after the first half inning. James Lane led off with a double and scored on a single by Tyler Straka, who in turn came home on a single by Prignon. The final two runs scored on a fielder’s choice resulting from a bases-loaded ball hit to the outfield by Ryan Tillotson.
The winners’ other run came in the sixth as Zach Travis doubled, stole third and came home on a passed ball.
Woods, playing shortstop at the time, ranged to his right for a grounder with two on and two out in the second and threw from his knees to first baseman Gary Reagan, who scooped the ball up for the final out.
Cortland will take part in a Teeners tournament in Binghamton this Friday and Saturday before competing in the league tournament starting July 20.
