Pappa's rallies late for playoff surprise

Pappa’s exploded for nine runs on eight hits in the top of the seventh inning Monday night to erase a 7-3 lead and held on to beat Brix 12-9 in the first game of their best-of-three Cortland Men’s Fastpitch League first-round playoff series.
Pappa’s finished third during the regular softball season and Brix was the runner-up.
Form held in the other series as regular-season champion Dark Horse downed fourth-place Mister B’s 8-3 behind a five-hitter by pitcher Bill Morse.
Pappa’s 12, Brix 9: Lenny Hubbard went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored and winning pitcher Mike Holl was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs to key the winners’ 13-hit attack. Tom Burk went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and three runs, while Chad Newton was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Aaron Galutz went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run for Brix, while Cale Giroux went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs. Mark Kinner (home run, two RBIs, two runs) and Roger Karn (three RBIs) both went 2-for-4.
Brix had rallied from a 3-2 deficit with a five-run fifth, with Kinner and Tom Avery both hitting two-run homers and Mike Avery cracking an RBI double.
Dark Horse 8, Mister B’s 3: Morse struck out six Mister B’s batters and has now won seven of the eight games he’s pitched this season. Gabe Newton led the Dark Horse offense, going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.
Bill Francis (RBI, run), Paul Sweger (run) and Jake Robillard all went 2-for-3 for the winners, while Brian Ballard went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and home run for Mister B’s. Mike Lowie drove in a run and scored twice and Morgan DuBois had a double in defeat.
After Wednesday night’s Old-Timers’ Game, the playoffs continue this Monday at Meldrim Field as Pappa’s (5-11) takes on Brix (10-6) at 6:30 p.m. and Mister B’s (3-13) goes against Dark Horse (14-2) at 8:15 p.m.
