Central City’s late rally turns extra sweet
With the help of five walks from the opposing pitcher in the top of the seventh inning, Central City scored eight times to tie the game before coming up with two more runs in the eighth to cap an 18-16 come-from-behind victory over Woody’s in the Cortland Men’s Slowpitch Softball League A Division Friday.
Central City also scored a 19-12 win over Ink’d in a make-up game, while in other A Division action Red Jug Pub downed Ink’d 20-13.
In B Division play, Gator’s rolled to a 19-3 win over Brix, King Sub downed The Tavern B 21-6 and Study Hall topped Red Dragon 17-12,
Central City 18, Woody’s 16: Woody’s came out hot, building a 16-8 lead over the first five innings. After a scoreless sixth inning, some timely hits, and those five walks, allowed Central City to knot the score at 16-16.
Chris Carlton led the Central City attack by going 3-for-4 with a triple and five RBIs. Matt Rutkowski added a 3-for-5 bat with a double. Chuck Pendock and Tim Bauman each went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Matt Compton and Louis Carrion each swung 3-for-4 bats for Woody’s. Nick Hoffmann pitched in with a 2-for-5 effort.
Central City 19, Ink’d 12: Unlike its other game, Central City raced to a 9-0 lead over the first three innings of this contest. Ink’d did all its damage in the final four innings, including a six-run seventh inning, but the addition 10 Central City runs made a comeback impossible.
Matt Rutkowski paced the Central City power attack going 5-for-6 with two doubles, one home run and five RBIs. Bill Francis was a perfect 6-for-6 with three runs scored and three RBIs for the winners. Josh Bogdon (3-for-5) and T.J. Griffin (2-for-5) each drove in three runs while Ernest Case (2-for-5) scored three times.
Scott Knight led Ink’d with a 3-for-3 effort. Stacy Bischoff was 2-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs while Kirk Arnold was 2-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs.
Red Jug Pub 20, Ink’d 13: Red Jug Pub trailed 13-7 before a huge 13-run output in the bottom of the fourth put RJP in front 20-13 in the rain-shortened contest.
Corry Murray smacked a home run for Red Jug. Steve Bradley added a triple while John Robinson belted three doubles.
Kirk Arnold hit two doubles for Ink’d. Josh Sutton cracked one two-bagger.
Gator’s 19, Brix 3: Gator’s scored six runs in the top of the first inning, but didn’t add to its total until a 10-run explosion in the top of the sixth. Ron Owen Jr. (triple), Bob Durbin and Andy Warholic each went 3-for-4 as every Gator’s player had at least one run and scored one run.
Dave Bloodgood (triple) and Jeremy Baker were each 2-for-3 for Brix.
King Sub 21, The Tavern B 6: King Sub posted nine runs in the bottom of the first inning and rolled to a five-inning victory.
Aaron Galutz led the 19-hit attack going 4-for-4 with three doubles and three RBIs. Nick Mish added a 4-for-4 effort of his own with five RBIs. Mike Eves (2 doubles) and Justin Travis swung 3-for-4 bats with two RBIs each and Jay Hartnett was 2-for-3 with two ribbies.
Pete Natale and Nick Peters were each 2-for-3 for The Tavern. Natale hit a triple.
Study Hall 17, Red Dragon 12: Study Hall scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an 8-3 lead, but it was a six-run fourth inning that turned the tide.
Chris Beebe was 3-for-4 with a triple and home run to lead Study Hall. Danny Marks added a 3-for-4 bat with one double and Travis Rheinhiemer was 3-for-4. Mike Amo was a perfect 2-for-2.
Mark Coon, Ed Kelley and Dave Lemou each went 3-for-4 for Red Dragon.
