Long night a big success for Ivan’s
What turned into a long night of softball turned out pretty darn well for Ivan’s.
After pulling out a 6-5 victory over Friends in a 10-inning Cortland Men’s Slow Pitch battle at Beaudry Park on Scott Knight’s game-winning single, the National Division leaders played the Meldrim Field nightcap and turned back King Sub 11-8 behind home runs belted by Ricky Stauber and Knight.
Those two wins wrapped up first place in the division, as second place NAPA was falling 9-7 to a short-handed Meldrim Paint squad.
The two top teams in the American Division coasted to five-inning mercy rule victories, first place Grand Rental Station/Gable Inn a 19-3 winner over Stone Lounge/Willcox Tires while second place Central City Bar & Grill clubbed Hooley’s 28-10. The multi-sponsored GSG Vincent/Dark Horse/Hairy Tony’s squad picked up a pair of victories, beating Hooley’s 17-4 and knocking off third place Red Dragon 8-6.
Ivan’s 6, Friends 5, 10 innings: Friends actually led 5-0 heading into the bottom of the second and did not score again. Stauber and winning pitcher Corey Romans were 4-for-4 in leading the Ivan’s attack, with three of Stauber’s hits doubles. Knight’s game-winning single capped a 3-for-5 performance. Ryan Eddy was 3-for-4 with a triple for Friends, Brian Luther and Jeremy Baker with two-hit games.
Ivan’s 11, King Sub 8: Ivan’s never trailed in the later contest, Stauber going 3-for-3 with his home run and a triple. Tim Metcalf and hurler Romans were both 2-for-3 in the victory. Jon Kozlowski was 3-for-3 with a triple and Cliff Quick 3-for-4 for King Sub, who scored five times over the final two innings to make things interesting. Chuck Wilbur and Miguel Maldanado were each 2-for-3 in the loss.
Meldrim Paint 9, NAPA 7: Chris Carpenter’s 4-for-4 hitting performance led an 18-hit Meldrim Paint attack. Winning pitcher Jason Seamans and J. Lawton were also 3-for-4 for the victors.
Grand Rental/Gable Inn 19, Stone Lounge/Willcox Tire 3: Brian Bowman (3x4), Jason Hogan (3x3) and Danny Harris (3x4) all hit home runs as Grand Rental Station/Gable Inn improved to 22-1 on the season. Bryan Taylor (3x4) scored three times and Jamie Buck (3x5) had a pair of doubles in the romp. Stone Lounge/Willcox Tire managed just six hits including a Dave Seamans triple.
Central City 28, Hooley’s 10: Dennis Hopkins homered and drove in five runs during a 4-for-4 outing that led Central City, a 15-run outburst in the third inning and a 12-run scoring spree in the fifth doing the most damage. Winning pitcher Frank Tibke (3x5) drove in four runs, Fred Casterline (4x5) had three RBI and Bill Francis (4x5) scored four times for the victors, Jim Hogan and Cory Langtry also with three-hits apiece. Matt Rutkowski and Eric Miller homered for Hooley’s, Miller a perfect 3-for-3 while Rutkowski drove in three runs.
