Marauders take Teeners title

BINGHAMTON — With Jake Casey leading the way on the mound and at the plate, the Central New York Marauders defeated Newark Valley 7-4 to capture the Southern Tier Teeners National League B Division 16-Under baseball championship this past Saturday at NYSEG Stadium.
Casey struck out 11 batters over five inning of work and was 2-for-2 with the bat, including a two-run triple in the fourth inning that gave the local Marauders a 3-1 lead.
The Marauders were blanked until the fourth, though they had their chances early.
In the first inning, Dylan Stafford (2x3) singled and stole second, only to be picked off to spoil that scoring chance. In the second, a leadoff Mike Hartnett triple went wasted, as a one-out line drive off the bat of Parker Williamson was snared by the Newark Valley shortstop and turned into an inning-ending double play.
Giving up an unearned run in the third inning put the Marauders in a 1-0 hole heading into the bottom of the fourth, when Connor L’Hommedieu drew a lead-off walk. Stafford’s double put runners on second and third. That’s when Casey ripped a two-run triple down the rightfield line, later to score himself on a wild pitch for that 3-1 edge.
The Marauders added two more runs in the fifth inning after Sully Hartnett opened with a single and moved to third on a double by Williamson. Kyle Ritz was hit by a pitch to fill the bases with no outs. Tom Belton singled to right field scoring Hartnett and Leo Riley walked to force home Williamson with what turned out being the winning run.
Payten Boice came in to pitch the fifth for the Marauders and ran into some control problems before allowing an RBI single that trimmed the lead to 5-3. The Marauders answered back with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth after both Casey and Boice singled to start the inning. They later scored on fielder choices to push the lead up to 7-3.
Mike Hartnett came out to pitch the seventh inning, allowing one run before getting a game-ending groundout.
The Marauders — who played home contests at Homer High School this summer — had beaten Newark Valley during the regular season 10-2. They trailed 1-0 through three innings before coming back.
“This was a great win for our Marauder program. The players worked hard all summer to reach this goal and it was nice they could end the baseball season with a win like this at NYSEG Stadium,” said Coach Tony Testa, his team playing at the Class AA home of the Binghamton Mets. “ The coaching staff was real proud of each and every player. They were a great group of kids to coach.”
The Marauders roster includes Stafford, Taylor Withiam, Casey, Boice, Mike Hartnett, Sully Hartnett, Williamson, Ritz, Tom Belton, Riley, and L’Hommedieu. The Marauders are coached by Testa and Troy Boice with assistance from Mark Withiam.
