Carr carries Cortland to title

SOLVAY — Five runs in the bottom of the third inning snapped a 1-1 deadlock and lifted Cortland towards an 8-1 baseball victory over Hannibal in the championship game of the Connie Mack League on Saturday.
Matt Carr tossed a complete game two-hitter, striking out a dozen batters, and Cortland collected 10 hits in this title contest played at Solvay High School. The champions won four times without a loss in this double-elimination tournament, including an earlier 1-0 victory over this same Hannibal squad.
Justin Burns and Brandon Watkins each drove in two runs for Cortland, Burns with a double and a triple on the day, to support Carr’s mound effort.
“Matt has been one of our go-to guys this year when we needed a big win,” said Coach Ed Southworth, Carr just allowing a pair of singles while walking five batters.
Tony Whitt scored three times for Cortland, while Carr, Brycen Dunn and Ryann Hubbard had two-hits apiece including a Carr double.
Hannibal beat Solvay to emerge from the loser’s bracket to get a second shot at Cortland.
“These guys work extremely hard all summer,” said Coach Southworth. “Some of them were even on three different teams. These guys just love to play. Their hard work and dedication paid off.
“This was our goal, to win a league championship,” he added. “We set our goal to get it and we never lost sight of the goal. I could not be more proud of these guys. We have some real good talent on our team and I believe this is just a glimpse of what they can achieve. I expect great things from this group of guys in the future.”
