‘A’ semis set, Ink’d-Red Jug Pub for ‘B’ crown

The final team joins the Cortland Men’s Slowpitch Softball League A Division semifinals while the B Division championship series was set during Tuesday night action.
Central City posted a 19-4 five-inning romp over Beer Goggles in the decisive third game of their A Division series to advance.
Ink’d and Red Jug Pub will square off for the B Division Championship after completing 2-0 sweeps in their semifinal series. Ink’d edged Gator’s 16-3 while Red Jug Pub outslugged Brix 20-17.
In C Division semifinal play, King Sub took the first game in its best-of-three series with an 18-9 triumph over The Tavern.
Central City 19, Beer Goggles 4: Central City spotted Beer Goggles two runs in the top of the first inning before answering with nine runs in the bottom of the inning to rolled to the win. Pat Casselberry led the winning assault as he went 4-for-4 at the plate. Fred Casterline, Jeff Carr and Josh Bogdan chipped in as each guy went 3-for-4.
Matt Rutkowski was 2-for-3 with two home runs for Beer Goggles.
Central City is the third seed and will join playoff number one seed Grand Rental Station/Gable Inn, second-seed GSG Vincent/St. Charles Hotel and fourth-seed Bow-Jen/Post 489 in the semifinal round.
Ink’d 16, Gator’s 13: Ink’d built a comfortable 12-3 lead after the top half of the fifth inning, but needed its four runs in the top of the seventh to finally secure the win. Trailing by 10, Gator’s plated seven runs in the bottom of the seventh to narrow the final deficit.
Jeremy Hutchings (triple), Scott Knight (2 doubles), Jeremy Sutton (double) and Stacey Bischoff each swung 3-for-4 bats for Ink’d. Randy Phillips, Ryan Briggs and Tony Keegan helped out as each went 3-for-5 with one double.
Dave Hubbard paced Gator by going 3-for-4 with two doubles and a home run. Tim Dovi (triple) and Bear Marshall also went 3-for-4. Mike Wehnke was 2-for-3 and Bill Epp went 2-for-4.
Red Jug Pub 20, Brix 17: Red Jug Pub joined Ink’d in the finals with the help of back-to-back six-runs third and fourth innings, but sealed the win with three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Brix kept battling, including a four-run seventh-inning rally that fell short.
Mike Browngardt led the winning attack as he was 4-for-4 with a double. Charles Benjamin, Mike Myers, Mike Reeners (double), Kyle Rogers and Barry Shaver (double) each provided 3-for-4 bats for Red Jug Pub.
Jeremy Baker was 4-4 for Brix. Leon Burk, Toby Walker and Dave Bloodgood added 3-for-4 efforts.
King Sub 18, The Tavern 9: King Sub grabbed the lead with six runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Tavern rallied with five runs in the third to close the gap to 6-5, but King Sub retook the momentum with five runs in the bottom of the same inning to rebuilt a six-run cushion and cruised from there.
Bob Durbin (3 RBIs) and Brad Sturdevant (2 RBIs) swung 4-for-4 bats for the winners. Chuck Wilbur and Joe Magee each added 3-for-4 bats with one double and three RBIs. Wilbur’s two-run double came in that first inning while Magee drove in two with his third-inning double.
Mark Helms was 4-for-4 for The Tavern with a third inning home run and a total of four RBIs. Nick Peters and Mike Poole each drove in two runs by going 2-for-4 at the plate in their appearances.
