Gridders begin CHS practices
The varsity and junior varsity football teams will be the first Cortland High fall squads to begin practicing, both at 3 p.m. this coming Monday at the high school.
Dave Darrow will again coach the varsity football squad, with Eric Prior returning as the JV coach.
The rest of Cortland’s varsity and JV teams, with the exception of the golf squad, will begin practicing on Aug. 24. Jamie Brown’s varsity field hockey squad and Maureen White’s JV team will go from 2:30 to 5 p.m. that day at the high school. The varsity boys’ soccer team, again coached by Nick Kline, and Tom Dovi’s JV boys’ squad will practice from 8 to 11 a.m. at Barry School, while varsity girls’ soccer coach Brian Rogers will conduct his first practice from 10 a.m. to noon at the high school, where JV girls’ coach Bob Applegate will hold practice from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
The girls’ varsity (Coach Bob Walrath) and JV (Coach Lara Almansberger) tennis teams will both practice from 3 to 5:30 p.m. that day on the high school courts, while new coach Diana Joslyn’s girls’ swimming team will hold its opening practice from 5 to 7 p.m. at Tompkins Cortland CC.
The boys’ and girls’ cross country teams, under Bob Vidulich, will practice from 3:15 to 5 p.m. on Aug. 24 at the high school, and the track at the high school will be the site of the first practice for Brittanie Magnus’s cheerleading squad, going from 8 to 11 a.m.
The boys’ golf team, under Yale Hughes, will begin practicing at 9:45 a.m. Aug. 25 at Cortland Country Club.
The modified football team, under new head coach Zac Darrow, will have its first practice from 3:15 to 5 p.m. Sept. 8 at the high school’s lower gym. The modified field hockey team, coached by Leslie Zimmerman, will practice for the first time from 3 to 5 p.m. Sept. 9 at the high school.
Also on Sept. 9, the modified boys’ soccer team, with new coach Ben Albright in charge, will practice from 2:45 to 5:15 p.m. at the high school, where Jim Wallis’s modified girls’ soccer team will go from 3:15 to 5:30 p.m. Ron Reed’s boys’ and girls’ modified cross country teams will practice for the first time from 2:45 to 4:30 p.m. that day at the high school.
All athletes must present a signed physical card before being allowed to participate in practices or games.
