Trojans get off to strong start

SYRACUSE — It was a day of many firsts for the Homer Central golf team as the Trojans opened the 2007 season against East Syracuse-Minoa Orange Monday.
The most important being that the Trojans defeated the host Spartans 210-220 in this OHSL Freedom American Division match.
The visiting team score of 210 was good enough on the par 35 Poolsbrook layout to qualify Homer for the team sectionals, the first time in several years, and it gave this young team a lot of confidence.
“It was nice to get the win,” said Homer coach Gary Wilcox. “It was nice to see all five scores that counted be under 45 and it was nice to get the team sectional qualifying score in the first match of the season.
“Poolsbrook is a little course with some tricky greens,” Wilcox continued. “They were much slower than what we have been practicing on so that led to some putting problems.”
Dan Miller, Andy Saraceno and Brad Mitchell each shot six-over par 41 to lead the Trojan scoring. Miller had one double bogey and one triple bogey to account for five of his six strokes over par in just two holes.
“Dan, Andy and Brad were all frustrated that they each missed qualifying for the individual sectional tournament by one stroke,” Wilcox said of their efforts in their first away match. “I did tell them that qualifying for team sectionals was a good start. We can now concentrate on one good team score at home (Cortland Country Club) now.”
Rounding out the scoring five were Greg Eves, who shot 43, and Molly Nulty with her 44. Lane Hopkins shot 46 for the Trojans.
Travis Oot led ES-M Orange with his round of 39.
Homer will return to action Wednesday as the Trojans host Syracuse Christian Brothers Academy at 9 a.m. match at Cortland CC.
