Cortland Christian’s Korissa Kinney (right) makes a move on Finger Lakes’ Katie Curtis in the second half Friday. Kinney scored three goals to break her own single-season school record.

While Korissa Kinney and Linnea Sweeney both came up with three-goal hat tricks to carry Cortland Christian Academy girls to their most recent soccer success, Kinney’s scoring splurge had additional meaning.
Junior Kinney would break her own school single-season record for goals scored during her big afternoon, which helped the Lady Saints come up with a 7-1 home field victory over Finger Lakes Christian on Friday.
Kinney now has 35 goals on a season that has the Lady Saints 9-2-1 in Empire State Christian Athletic League play and 9-3-1 overall, three better than the school record she achieved just a year ago. She also contributed three assists to this winning effort against the visitors from Seneca Falls.
This Senior Recognition contest was also special for seniors Jordan Rofe and Jesse Sawyer in the nightcap, as the two defenders both scored goals as Cortland Christian boys came closer to securing a playoff berth with a 5-0 blanking of Finger Lakes. The Saints are 7-4-1 in league play and 7-5-1 overall heading into a rescheduled trip to take on Corning Christian on Monday.
After that Columbus Day special that will start with the girls’ game at 2 p.m., Cortland Christian closes out the regular season traveling to Oswego to face the Port City Royals on Tuesday. Both teams will have a week off before playoffs arrive.
— Kinney figured in six of Cortland Christian’s seven goals in the girls’ triumph, also coming up with three assists including the game-opening goal by Sweeney. Kinney had a first shot saved and a second shot bang off the post before Sweeney was there to convert on the rebound.
Elizabeth Betters gave the Lady Saints a 2-0 lead before Kinney came up with back-to-back tallies — the second a long shot off an Emily Nelson assist. Sweeney made it 5-0 with 9:30 left in the opening half, scoring off a Kinney through pass.
Sweeney’s third goal came from a Kinney crossing pass to get the second half scoring started. After Finger Lakes spoiled senior goalie Sarina Sweeney’s bid for a shutout with a goal by Kay Frascatore midway through the half, Kinney’s third goal arrived three minutes from the finish when she split the Finger Lakes defense.
Cortland Christian held a 27-16 shot edge, Sarina Sweeney with 10 saves in goal for the winners.
— Cortland Christian boys held a 30-10 shot advantage, with Brandon Nelson (3 saves) and Jason Bramhall (1 save) combining on the blanking of Finger Lakes.
Ryan Tuttle scored twice in the victory, including a goal five minutes into the game. Rofe’s goal came off a Tuttle corner kick, the goalie slapping the ball out to the top of the box where the Saints’ defender sent it back on goal.
The Saints went up 3-0 by halftime, as Micah Ploss scored after taking a square pass from Peter Hicks.
Tuttle headed home his second goal to get the scoring started in the second half, coming after a Ploss shot had been knocked away by the Finger Lakes keeper. Sawyer got his goal midway through the second half, Micah Mowers with the assist.
