Herd ends up third

The Cortland-Homer Thundering Herd took third place in the Empire GU North Division with a 36-14 win over the Rochester Colonials this past Saturday.
The Herd lost three key players early due to injuries and relied most of the match on seldom-used reserves or men playing out of position. The Colonials provided constant pressure, but the Herd were able to exploit several breakdowns in their defense. Tries were scored by Justin Guernsey, Alex Kelsen, Dustin Morris (who earned Man of the Match honors), Patrick Riley, Tim Walsh and Mikel Withers.
The Thundering Herd finished 7-1 in their first year back in the reformatted Empire GU, and will play the Suffolk Rugby Club Apr. 20 for a chance at the Empire GU title.
The Herd will be next in action Nov. 17 at the 13th Annual Deer and Beer Rugby Tournament, sponsored by Palm Gardens and Cortland Beer Company. The tournament, the largest Fall rugby tournament on the east coast, will be held on the fields behind the Armory on Wheeler Ave. Many teams from around the Northeast will be there.
