Squirts do weekend split on ice

It was a split weekend for the Cortland Flames Squirt Travel hockey squad.
The Squirts won a 5-2 road game against the Syracuse Girls 10-and-under team Saturday, but then dropped a 3-2 Sunday morning contest at Meachem Ice Rink to the Valley Squirt team. The Flames returned home Sunday afternoon to battle same the Valley Squad to a 5-5 draw at the J.M. McDonald Sports Complex.
Nick Gravel had the hat trick for the Flames in the Syracuse win. Liam Chase and Kevin Gardner chipped in with one goal and one assist each. Elizabeth Evens made 10 saves for Cortland.
Gravel provided the offense in the loss to Valley Saturday by lighting the lamp twice. Drew Bilodeau and Lauren Swartz collected one assist each. Madeleine Erno was busy between the pipes as she made 25 saves to keep the Flames close.
In the rematch at McDonald, Adam Buttaccio led the home team with two goals. Gravel netted one goal with one helper as did Dante Patriarco. Gardner collected one Flames’ goal as well with Caleb Erno dishing out two assists. Madeleine Erno made 19 saves for Cortland in the draw.
It was both ends of the spectrum for the Cortland Flames Snowbelt icers. Cortland scored a 10-2 win Saturday over visiting Center State. The Flames were on the receiving end of a 9-2 setback Sunday to host Fulton.
Trevor Jubran led the high-powered offense with three goals and two assists. Zack Malyszek and Joshua Cargen each tallied twice with Malyszek also recording two assists. Kyle Howser (two assists), Adam Jubran (one assist) and Michael Jewitt notched one goal for the winners and Andrew Lynch helped out with one assists. Flames goalkeeper Brandon Ludwig needed to make just five saves while his counterpart made 55 stops.
Sunday saw Ludwig under a lot of pressure and he responded with 28 saves in the 9-2 loss. Adam Jubran scored both goals for Cortland.
The Groton City Animal Hospital-Homer Logging-Borg Warner Bantams lost both ends of a weekend hone-and-home series with Camillus. Cortland lost 3-1 on the McDonald ice Saturday and were shutout 6-0 at Camillus Sunday.
Mike May scored the only goal for the home team Saturday. Ryan Gabriel recorded 20 saves in goal.
Sunday, Tyler Wallace made 21 saves while surrendering six goals. Cortland did got a healthy number of shots as Camillus goalkeeper Pat Byrnes made 20 saves.
It was a tough weekend for the Cortland Flames Pee Wee Travel team. The team dropped all three games including a pair of 3-1 decisions. The first was Saturday to visiting Ithaca and the second was Sunday afternoon to visiting Skaneateles. In between, Ithaca rolled to a 6-1 home ice win Sunday morning.
Mike Turck scored the lone goal with an assist by Matthew Pelowski in Saturday’s setback. The score may have been much worse except for the work of Flames’ goalkeeper P.J. Shager and his 37 saves.
Truck was the assister Sunday morning on Jayson Wojcinski’s third-period goal. Shager was busy with a 33-save effort in the 6-1 loss.
Against Skaneateles, the Flames for the third time over the weekend scored a third period goal. Jake Prunier did the lamp lighting with assists from Matt Gombas and Dylan Cooper. Shager recorded 19 saves in goal for Cortland.
The Flames generated more scoring opportunities Sunday forcing Ithaca’s Griffin Varriccho to make 25 saves in the morning while Maria McLean posted 24 saves for Skaneateles.
Three CCYHA mites teams hosted Midstate Saturday at the McDonald Complex before traveling to Midstate’s home ice on Sunday.
The Computing Center Mite B team got goals from Hannah Partigianoni and Dillon Skinner during a 4-3 win over Midstate Saturday while Adam Howser made 22 saves. On Sunday, Partigianoni and Skinner were joined in the scoring column by Jed Brazo, Matthew Megley and Andrew Partigianoni during the 10-7 loss to Midstate. Howser made 12 saves and teammate Riley Delage added eight saves.
The Traver Mills Mite C squad dropped a 10-5 decision Saturday and were 17-7 winners Sunday.
Rachelle Cain, Logan Swartz and Aiden Villnave were Saturday goal scorers while Riley Delage made 45 saves. Swartz, Villnave, Hunter Everle and Tucker Gabriel netted the Sunday goals. There were no goalies used Sunday.
The Darl Zehr Photography Mite C squad won both games against Midstate.
Chase Albro, Padraic Andrews, Dominic Barbato, Jacob Couture, Logan Goodman, Jonathon Henry and Reid Villnave contributed goals during Saturday;’s 16-9 victory while no goalkeepers were used.
Albro, Andrews, Goodman and Henry notched goals in the 6-5 victory Sunday. Ryan Delage made 17 saves in goal with Andy Howser recording eight saves during his time between the pipes.
