OHSL volleyball: Purple Tigers still streaking
The Cortland High volleyball team closed out the 2013 portion of its schedule Monday with its fourth straight win, 22-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-16 over visiting Weedsport.
The Purple Tigers improved to 5-2 in the OSHL Freedom/Liberty League, while Weedsport is now 2-5 in the OHSL Patriot National and 2-6 overall.
“The holiday break made us a little slow in the beginning of this one, but I think the girls snapped out of it pretty quickly,” Purple Tigers coach Cheri Olson said. “We have now improved to 5-2 and we finally are gaining the momentum that we need to see us through to the end of this season. The girls continue to work as a team. No matter who is out on the court, we are working well together and that is something that was lacking a bit in the beginning of the season.”
Senior outside hitter Lily Carlton had five kills, seven digs and a block for the winners, while senior middle blocker Chelsea Vallilee had six kills and an ace and junior setter Danielle Lynch eight assists, two aces and two digs. Senior libero Kayla Holl contributed 10 digs to the victory, junior setter Shelina Carrion had eight assists and an ace and senior right side Liza Ferro two kills, four digs, two aces and a block.
The Warriors were led by senior outside hitter Samantha Bunce with 19 kills, four digs and ace. She was complemented by senior setter Kaylee Walker with 10 assists, two digs, an ace and a kill; junior setter Nicole Landes with 10 assists and two digs; senior middle/outside hitter Erin Taro with five aces, four digs and three kills and sophomore middle hitter Emily Quinn with six kills.
CORTLAND JVs lost to Weedsport 10-25, 25-18, 25-14 and are now 2-5 league and overall. Freshman outside hitter Kristin Bush served for 17 straight points to close out the win in the opening game.
Both Cortland teams host Port Byron on Thursday, starting with the JV match at 5:30 p.m.
